“Ideas are to objects as constellations are to stars.”
— Walter Benjamin, The Arcades Project

A constellation does not reside in the stars themselves. It lives in the intervals between them, in the lines we draw, the connections we imagine, and the meaning that crystallises only through relationships. It is an act of interpretation imposed upon distance.

Summer Constellations takes this productive tension as its point of departure. Bringing together thirteen Cypriot and international artists, the exhibition approaches painting not as a fixed category or simply as image-making, but as an expanded field of material, gesture, memory, mark, surface, conceptual space, image, and objecthood. It considers how contemporary practices continue to expand painting beyond its conventional boundaries. The works move between abstraction and figuration, between the intimacy of the painted surface and broader questions of cultural memory, identity, and psychological experience.

Rather than proposing a unified thesis, the exhibition operates as Benjamin’s constellation does: as a configuration in which meaning emerges through proximity, difference, and the productive friction of encounter. Each artist arrives with a distinct visual language and set of concerns, yet the works enter into dialogue, revealing unexpected affinities and shared preoccupations.

Painting here is understood not only as an image to be read, but as a surface to be encountered — a place where histories, materials, emotions, and ideas are compressed, layered, interrupted, or reconfigured. Across the exhibition, painting becomes a site of transformation: a way of holding memory, testing perception, and giving form to the unstable relationships between the personal and the collective, the visible and the concealed.

In an era defined by image saturation and the accelerated consumption of the visual, Summer Constellations proposes painting as a space of resistance — a site of attention, duration, and embodied experience. Through materially driven and conceptually layered works, the exhibition asks what it means to look slowly, and what only becomes visible when we do.
