About the Artwork

He grew up in the woods, trees were climbing frames, low branches seesaws, and fallen twigs were swords. Ropes hung from many branches, stick or loops tied to the ends. They replaced siblings that were never born. The trees depicted in ‘Dendron’ are all trees he has known and felt affection for. Most grow within 500 yards from the place he was born. Some are champion trees (the highest in the county or the broadest in the country). Some are from a nearby Pinetum (a living archive of native or naturalised evergreens).

By documenting a 1:1 section of their trunk it alludes to a dendrological investigation of these trees, but all information other than their image is redacted. It leaves a disembodied texture which oscillates from micro to macro.

Unidentifiable as oak or ash, beech or sycamore, they become ‘Dendron’ 1/25, ‘Dendron’ 2/25; the first of a whole, the second of a whole. Further once purchased and separated by location. One can no longer reference them against each other and their physical differences can’t be quantified.
